Steindler flexorplasty to restore elbow flexion in C5-C6-C7 brachial plexus palsy type
BACKGROUND Loss of elbow flexion due to traumatic palsy of the brachial plexus represents a major functional handicap. Then, the first goal in the treatment of the flail arm is to restore the elbow flexion by primary direct nerve surgery or secondary reconstructive surgery. There are various methods to restore elbow flexion which are well documented in the medical literature but the most known a...

PURPOSE Our goal was to investigate the capacity of a Steindler flexorplasty to restore elbow flexion to persons with C5-C6 brachial plexus palsy. In this procedure the origin of the flexor-pronator mass is moved proximally onto the humeral shaft. We examined how the choice of the proximal attachment site for the flexor-pronator mass affects elbow flexion restoration, especially considering pos...
متن کاملTriceps to biceps transfer for restoration of elbow flexion following upper brachial plexus injury
INTRODUCTION Upper brachial plexus injury in adults causes loss of elbow fl exion; when the primary nerve surgery has failed or the patient seeks treatment after 12 months of injury and pedicled muscle transfers are required. Most commonly, the latissimus dorsi or the Steindler flexorplasty is used. MATERIAL AND METHODS We have transferred one of the heads of triceps muscle to restore the elb...
متن کاملRestoration of elbow flexion after brachial plexus injury: the role of nerve and muscle transfers.
Brachial plexus trauma results in a variable loss of upper extremity function. The restoration of this function requires elbow flexion of adequate strength and range of motion. A proper evaluation of brachial plexus lesions is a prerequisite to any reconstructive procedure, and appropriate guidelines are presented. One option for restoring elbow flexion is a nerve transfer. The best results wit...
متن کاملRestoration of shoulder function and elbow flexion by nerve transfer for poliomyelitis-like paralysis caused by enterovirus 71 infection.
We report the case of an eight-month-old girl who presented with a poliomyelitis-like paralysis in her left upper limb caused by enterovirus 71 infection. She recovered useful function after nerve transfers performed six months after the onset of paralysis. Early neurotisation can be used successfully in the treatment of poliomyelitis-like paralysis in children.
